Growth prospect in food grade lubes and greases
Nov 4, 2010

Besides the current use in lubricants and greases applications, tremendous growth is expected in the future for ionized oils (i.e. VOLTRION 2507) in other niche markets such as the food processing applications, as they are able to reveive NSF H-1 and HX-1 registration for applications where for instance incidental food contact may occur. Wherever longer life and better performance is sought formulators should consider these multifunctional ionized components. They may be used in all product areas and lubricating applications one may think of, and at various levels of weight percentage in formulas

Hydraulic oils: Performance trends
Oct 16, 2010

Modern hydraulic equipment design is focused to reduce the size of both the hydraulic pumps and the oil sumps, while maintaining or even increasing the high flow rates, pressures and temperatures. This means less oil to handle these variables with as a result that the hydraulic oils of today and tomorrow must thrive to handle a lot more stress, shear stability, higher temperatures than it used to do in the past. Formulating a longer lasting oil with improved anti-wear and anti-friction for overall equipment and tools protection becomes more and more important in the industry. Add on top of that enhanced biodegradability, multiple base oil compatibility and superlubricity and you understand why VOLTRION 5008 is called a multifunctional component.

Solubility: polarity of esters vs. ionized oils
Sept 24, 2010

Group III mineral oils and most synthetics base stocks are non-polar and have trouble solubilizing additives. Therefore a polar blendstock such as esters is needed as to be able to formulate with sufficient (optimal) additive concentrations. Esters are extremely polar, sometimes too polar leading to competition with other additives for the surface of the metal that needs to be protected, instead of just solubilizing them. Although of a high polarity, the ionized oils (i.e. VOLTRION 5008) as a result of their particular molecular structure, do not compete with other additives, on the contrary, they enhance the dispersion and solubility performance of the lubricant and maintain a strong resilient protection film on the metal surfaces. Use of VOLTRION 5008 enhance the effectiveness of additives of all types and may sometimes even lead to a decrease of their concentration.

Evolution of Base Oil Technology
August 29, 2010

The current trend is towards lubricants and base oils with higher purity, lower volatility and longer life. A newer hydroprocessing technology is used to produce super-synthetic base oils (Group III+) from natural gas (GTL). This technology will co-exist and compete with the relatively costly PAOs. However, severely treated base oils such as Group III+ lack one very important propery: LUBRICITY. This is where superlubricity bio-components such as VOLTRION 5008 play an important part.

The "Less ZDDP, More Synergy"-effect
June 6, 2010

One of the most prevalent anti-wear chemistries used today remain the cost-efficient and multifunctional, ZDDPs (which basically work by decomposing at the metal-to-metal areas in order to from a protective layer on the parts). Yet, to be able to meet the new reduced SAPS restrictions one has to compensate and balance its formulation with additional specific additives to bring the enhanced performances much needed by current and future lubricants. Ideally one should be able to reduce ZDDP and add as few supplemental additives as possible to reach the required lubricant performance level. VOLTRION's oil chemicals, being multifunctional components containing no ash-forming organo-metallic additives, have zero impact on SAPS level in the formula. They form synergies with ZDDP (as well as with other conventional EP/AW additives). Combining VOLTRION 5008 with EP additives does not only reduce wear drastically, it also increases the lubricity, oxidation stability and overall performance of the lubricant. Hence formulating with less ZDDP and VOLTRION 5008 creates opportunities for today's and tomorrow's lubricant formulators.
